Lampião faz homenagem a Mário de Andrade
Abstract
This work has the objective of proving that Lampião is the son of the Saint through the literature compositions of Pedra Bonita and Cangaceiros, both written by José Lins do Rêgo.
In order to do that, we divided the reseach in two parts: in the first one, we analyse Pedra Bonita, which is about the religious fanatism of a northeastern community called Açu Village, the great hero of the plot, whose people spend most of their lives in a forced idleness caused by the dry climate of the region.
Yet there was no perspective to the habitants of that place, which provokes in every man a feeling of leisure and those people hates at the same rate Pedra Bonita, a cursed religious focus, which keeps an unveilable and unforgotten secret.
However, the author creates a character, Antonio Bento. This boy was given to Amâncio, the priest of Açu Village, by Vieira family when he was four years old. They ran away from the 1904’s dryness. Antonio Bento was the only survivor of Pedra Bonita’s massacre at the age of seventeen. He carries all the angry of Açu´s habitants – brought up by the Priest, brother of a “cangaceiro”, “bad blood”(sangue ruim??). As he doesn’t feel the love of their own people, he decides to leave his homeland and lives just like a real man. He has already found his mirror: Dioclécio, a singer and an adventurer.
In the second part we discuss about Cangaceiros, an intense novel, without subtittles. It happens because all characters participate of the actions of the plot; they are all relevants. This complex romance involves the “cangaceirismo” and all the problems of Brazilian Northeastern caused by the apathy of several drynesses.
However, it’s the straight and rude language of Cangaceiros which turns reality into fiction. Since the beginning of our proposal, we comment about the allusions to Canudos’s massacre and its leader Antonio Conselheiro. The first romance, religious and mistic, makes allusions to the real “cangaceirismo”; while the second spot presents constantly the memories of Canudos’s tragedy through a play of words.
We ratify that there is no heros in both romances because the author’s intention was to denouce the social delay of the dweller of the backcountry. As he was an exile, he doesn´t mention any governament.
Antonio Conselheiro actuated in the second part of XIX century while Lampião is from the first part of XX century. Therefore, both communities are similar in their way of acting, thinking and believing. Our study is about the social context of two diferent periods of history through two romances of José Lins do Rêgo.
key-words: “Cangaceirismo”, fanatism, dryness, misticism
